Career Aspiration

I aspire to build a career in the housing and homelessness sector, where I can contribute to improving access to safe, stable and affordable housing. In my future work, I hope to support single-parent families who often face significant financial and social barriers to maintaining secure accommodation. My goal is to assist them in navigating complex service systems and achieving long-term stability.

I aim to spend my work days engaging in strengths-based, person-centred practice. I am drawn to this way of working because housing instability is often shaped by systemic barriers rather than individual failings. It would allow me to focus on people’s capabilities and resilience while also providing practical support to address immediate barriers to housing stability.

As a future human services practitioner, I am motivated to engage in ethical and socially responsible practice that recognises diverse experiences and individual needs. This matters to me because it helps ensure people are treated with dignity and respect, particularly when they may feel marginalised or overlooked. For me, professional success will be reflected in the trust I build with clients and the meaningful, gradual improvements I support in their lives.

SMART Goals

These SMART goals outline specific, achievable milestones that will support my progress towards my long-term career aspirations.

Practise Professional Communication Skills During Placement

During my 13-week field placement, starting on 13 July 2026, I will strengthen my professional communication skills for human services practice through regular client engagement. I will participate in at least three client interactions each week and use active listening, empathy, paraphrasing and clear questioning to build rapport and respond appropriately. This goal is relevant to my long-term aim of working in the housing and homelessness sector, where strong communication is essential for supporting people experiencing crisis and complex needs. To support my development, I will seek weekly verbal feedback from my supervisor and record this in a reflective journal so I can identify areas for improvement and apply them in future interactions. Evidence of success will include consistent participation in client work, supervisor feedback showing progress, and greater confidence in building rapport and communicating effectively with clients by the end of the placement.

Explore Career Pathways in Housing and Homelessness Through Event Participation

To learn more about career pathways in the housing and homelessness sector and begin building professional connections, I will attend the Thrive at Work Summit 2026 on 14 May 2026. As I aspire to work in frontline housing and homelessness roles, I want to better understand the pathways, roles and experiences that lead into this area of practice. Before the event, I will review the program, identify up to five presenters whose roles align with my interests, and prepare questions about their roles, career journeys and work in the sector. During the summit, I will introduce myself to at least two presenters, ask questions about their experience, and connect with them on LinkedIn. Within one week, I will send follow-up messages and review their LinkedIn profiles to learn more about their career journeys. Evidence of success will include two LinkedIn connections, follow-up communication, and a stronger understanding of career pathways in housing and homelessness.

Develop Knowledge of Housing and Homelessness Legislation

To improve my industry knowledge for future work in housing and homelessness, I will strengthen my understanding of key legal and policy frameworks by reviewing the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008, the Housing Act 2003, and the National Housing and Homelessness Agreement between May and June 2026. I will spend approximately two weeks on each document, making notes on the most important points and reflecting on how they may affect clients and service responses in practice. A strong understanding of legislation and policy is essential in this sector because it shapes tenant rights, service eligibility and access to housing support. Developing this knowledge will help me understand how legal frameworks influence client experiences and guide ethical, informed practice. Evidence of success will include completed notes for all three documents and greater confidence in explaining how legislation and policy influence client situations and service delivery.
